Cannibalism is the practice of humans eating the flesh or internal organs of other human beings. Cannibalism was practiced in New Guinea, Fiji, Amazonia, Congo, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and in parts of the Solomon Islands, and flesh markets existed in some parts of Melanesia.

The map below, from the German publisher A. Hartleben, presents a map of the range of anthropophagy, both historical (in green) and contemporary (in red).

The Cannibal Map of the World (1893)

Cannibalism has recently been both practiced and fiercely condemned in several wars, especially in Liberia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It was still practiced in Papua New Guinea as of 2012, for cultural reasons and in ritual and in a war in various Melanesian tribes.
