But the population center in each country is not permanent. For example, in the United States аfter moving 966 kilometers (600 miles) west by south throughout the 19th century, the change in the mean center of the population during the 20th century was less noticeable, moving 521 kilometers 324 miles west and 163 kilometers (101 miles) south. Almost 79 percent of the overall southerly shift occurred between 1950 and 2000.
